This Cardinal Christmas Angel comes in 5”, 6”, 8” and 10” tall. Each angel is individually handmade by me from wool and natural fibers using needle-felting techniques. She has soft white wings, long auburn hair, a warm winter hat, an ivory-white dress and a green wool bodice decorated with red and white details. In her arms she carries a little hand-felted red cardinal, while trailing greenery and tiny red flowers decorate her gown.
She is made as a Christmas tree topper, with a hollow base that allows her to sit over the top branch of the tree. The 5” and 6” sizes are lovely for smaller and tabletop trees, while the 8” and 10” angels have more presence on a larger Christmas tree.
When I created her, I imagined a little red cardinal appearing in the quiet winter garden just before Christmas. I have always loved how striking a cardinal looks against snow and evergreen—the tiny flash of brilliant red makes even the coldest winter day feel a little warmer.
I wanted this angel to have that same feeling. She has gathered her little cardinal close while trailing winter greenery and red flowers decorate her dress. Her cozy hat and soft wool layers give her a warm, storybook Christmas character.
I especially love making the cardinal. Each little bird is felted separately by hand before becoming part of the angel, so no two will ever be exactly alike.
Every angel is individually made by my hands, so her cardinal, hair, greenery, flowers and other small details will vary slightly. These differences are part of the handmade process and give each angel her own personality.
